Episode 32 | Feeding with Dr Kate Jenkins

In this episode of The Postpartum Season 2026 Educational Series, I'm joined by Dr Kate Jenkins, a GP and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), to discuss what parents can realistically expect when it comes to feeding their baby, and how to prepare for some of the challenges that can arise.

Dr Jenkins begins by sharing her own breastfeeding experience, including significant pain that went undiagnosed for months before she received the support she needed. That experience ultimately led her to pursue further training in breastfeeding medicine, with a particular understanding of the importance of listening to women, validating their experiences and providing timely, individualised care.

We discuss how parents can prepare for feeding during pregnancy without becoming overwhelmed, including antenatal breastfeeding education, hand expressing colostrum and understanding what breastfeeding commonly looks like in the early postpartum period. Dr Jenkins explains the physiology of milk production, cluster feeding, the challenges of the second night, and how to recognise whether a baby is receiving enough milk.

We also explore common feeding difficulties, including painful breastfeeding, concerns about milk supply, and the enormous demands of triple feeding. Dr Jenkins shares when additional support may be needed, the importance of seeking help from a qualified lactation consultant, and why feeding plans need to be realistic and sustainable for the whole family.

Throughout the episode, we return to the emotional impact feeding can have on mothers. Dr Jenkins speaks about the guilt, shame and feelings of failure that can accompany feeding difficulties, and why protecting parental mental health must always be part of the conversation.

This is a practical and compassionate discussion about feeding, with an important reminder that breastfeeding challenges are common, support is available, and the way you feed your baby does not determine your worth as a parent.
